Chapter 9

BY THE FOLLOWING week, Rosa had watched the training tape many times and had jotted down lots of notes in her notebook. She had even started making a chart to track Moose’s progress.

“I feel like a real scientist!” she boasted to her brother, who sat across from her at the dining room table, playing a handheld video game.

“Cool,” he said, taking quick peeks at her. “But you don’t look like one. You’re missing a white lab coat. And glasses. And a microscope.”

Rosa blew a raspberry at him. “Scientists can look however they want. Right, cutie?” She jiggled Moose, who was curled up in her lap. He yipped and rubbed his head against her stomach. He’d already been walked, fed, and brushed, and was happy to relax with a Rosa snuggle. “See?” she continued. “He agrees. And now my subject and I are going to get back to the experiment.”

She scooted her chair away from the table and gently placed Moose on the floor. Then she got to her feet and stared at her brother. “Ahem!”

Raymond’s eyes were still glued to the screen in front of him. “Yes! I got all the coins in level twelve. Take that, space slime!”

Rosa folded her arms. “I said, ‘AHEM!’ ”

Finally, Raymond jerked up his head and noticed Rosa tapping her foot impatiently. He sighed. “Oh, all right. I’m coming.” He turned off the video game and picked up his phone. “What am I filming this time?”

“First, we’re going to see if he remembers what ‘sit’ means. Then I’ll try teaching him how to shake.”

Rosa brought Moose into the center of the living room floor, and Raymond started filming. “Teaching Moose to sit, attempt number two!” Rosa announced.

She started by saying “sit!” while making eye contact with Moose. But he just looked back at her with a goofy grin on his face, his tongue hanging out of his mouth. So she moved forward and patted his backside and said “sit” again. He caught on that she was trying to teach him something, but he wasn’t sure what.
